winter success

I'm hoping this winter was successful.  What classifies as a successful winter?  It's not a mild winter where I was able to ride the entire time...nope, it's a cold one.  It a few long bouts of cold and even a healthy foot or two of snow.  PERFECT!!!
I'm really hoping this type of weather keeps our tick, mosquito and fly population down this year.  Last year is was completely terrible and ruined the spring for riding.  Last year we tried to ride but the ticks were climbing up the horses legs so bad they were dancing and biting their own legs.  It just wasn't worth trying to ride if you spent more time after the ride picking ticks off of yourself and your horse.
The birds are starting to chirp, the weather is getting warm and it's drying out from the rain last week.  I'd love nothing more than to go brush out my horse and go for a ride. However, this winter hasn't done me any favors.  While the weather cooperated, nothing else did.  My father is quite ill and I tore my ACL in February.
My ACL will require surgery and I'm not sure when I'll have it.  Either way I'll be out of commission for 4-6 months.  I am thinking I'll try to use some creative mounting strategies to see if I can still ride a little before I have surgery.  I'm not sure how my knee will feel in the stirrup but fingers crossed.
